What's Next?

With the agreement for Bulgaria and Romania to become members of the European Union, our country has committed to become part of the Eurozone when it meets the necessary criteria for membership. Upon entry, the euro will become the country's main currency and will replace the lev as such. It is envisaged that Bulgaria will be accepted into the euro area from 01.01.2026.

During this period, product prices in leva will also be indicated in euros. When:

  • It shall start 1 month after the date of entry into force of the EU Council Decision on the introduction of the euro.
  • It shall end 12 months after the date of introduction of the euro .

    • Up to the date of introduction of the euro, UBB will exchange banknotes and coins from levs into euros according to the bank's tariff in force as at the time of the exchange.
    • During the first 6 months after the date of introduction of the euro you will be able to exchange your banknotes and coins from levs to euros for free at a branch of the Bank.

  • After the first 6 months as from the date of introduction of the euro The exchange of banknotes and coins from levs into euros at UBB will be carried out according to the current bank's tariff.
  • After the first 12 months Since the introduction of the euro, you will only be able to exchange levs for euros at the BNB and in banks that have decided not to discontinue the exchange service.

01.01.2026 Оfficial admission of Bulgaria to the eurozone

One month after the date of introduction of the euro in the Republic of Bulgaria, the lev and the euro will continue to be both legal means of payment.

What does it mean:

  • In cash
    payment- you can pay in BGN and EUR, including bank fees, loan installments, account, deposit at the counter or at an ATM.
    withdrawal– if you withdraw money, it will be in euros as from the first day of its introduction as the official currency in the country.
  • digitally – all digital transactions will be carried out in euros as from the first day of its introduction as the official currency in the country.

Dual currency visualization

The dual currency visialization of prices for all goods and services offered to consumers in leva and in euro shall be introduced to facilitate the transition and adaptation of citizens to the new currency.

In addition, it plays the role of protection against abuse and speculative price increases during the process of introducing the euro.

What does joining the eurozone mean for me and the products I use?

The official currency in the Republic of Bulgaria shall become the euro and you may use it to pay in all countries in the eurozone.
As from the date of the introduction of the euro, all your products that have been in leva up to this point will be automatically converted into euros.
The cash you can withdraw from ATMs or at a bank branch will be in euros.

Accounts and deposits

The conversion of your bank accounts and deposits from levs to euros will take place on the day of the introduction of the euro.

  • The currency conversion will be carried out at the official exchange rate.
  • It is free for all citizens.
  • Transfers from and to your accounts and all cashless payments will be made in euros.
  • Withdrawals from an account or deposit will be in euros.
  • Your IBAN account number shall remain unchanged.
  • The agreed interest rate on your deposit shall remain unchanged.

Loans and leasing

  • Your loan and leasing products granted in levs will be automatically converted into euros on the day of the introduction of the euro.
  • If the agreed interest rate on your loan or lease is fixed, it will continue to be so after the introduction of the euro. The interest rate shall remain the same as it was before the date of the introduction of the euro.
  • If the agreed interest rate on your loan or lease (in BGN) is variable and there is a significant change or the preparation of the indices and/or indicators published by the Bulgarian National Bank or the National Statistical Institute, or the combination thereof, used as the basis for calculating the variable interest rate on your loan agreement, subject to conversion from BGN into EUR, is terminated, the Bank will apply the relevant alternative, which is used as a substitute for the one that is no longer prepared or has significantly changed, in accordance with its Action Plan adopted in accordance with the requirement under Article 28, paragraph 2 of Regulation (EU) 2016/1011. As at the date of the introduction of the euro, the new interest rate will not be higher than the applicable interest rate on your loan before the date of the introduction of the euro.
  • The amount of all sums due after the date of introduction of the eur which is in levs, including principal, interest, fees and the price of additional services, shall be converted into euros, according to the official exchange rate BGN/EUR.

Insurance and retirement benefit

  • The terms of your current insurance will not change.
  • Payment of the total amount due or installments of insurance premiums in cash within a period of one month after the date of introduction of the euro, will be made both in leva and in euro, and after this period cash payments will only be accepted in euro.
  • Payment of the total amount due or insurance premium installments by bank transfer after the date of the introduction of the euro will be made only in euros.
  • After date of the introduction of the euro, all new insurance will be offered only in euros.
  • After date of the introduction of the euro, all new insurance will be offered only in euros.
  • Your individual batches in a pension fund will be automatically converted into euros as from the date of the introduction of the euro.

Investments

  • Your assets in BGN in investment/mutual funds will be automatically and free of charge converted into euros by the Central Depository on the date of the introduction of the euro at the official exchange rate.
  • The risk profile and investment strategy of the fund you have invested in, shall remain unchanged after the introduction of the euro.
  • The expenses of the fund you have invested in shall be retained even after the introduction of the euro.
  • There will be no change regarding investments in investment/mutual funds in euros.

Branches accepting banknotes and coins

  • Banknotes - UBB will exchange in cash levs into euros at all branches of the bank (map). If the amount you would like to exchange exceeds 30 000 BGN, you need to make a prior request of 3 working days in order to secure the required quantity of banknotes.
  • Coins- UBB will exchange coins into euros at all branches of the bank. For larger quantities of coins, choose one of the branches designated for this purpose, which have coin counting machines and storage space.

ATMs

  • You can use UBB ATMs to deposit your levs into your account and the funds will be automatically converted into euros on the date of introduction of the euro.
  • To use this service, you need to be a UBB client and have an account to which you can deposit the banknotes.
