The Apollonia Foundation for art itself was established in 1991 as a successor of the concepts of the Academy for Art, founded in 1984 and bearing the same name. The Foundation is also the main organiser of the Apollonia Festival of Arts in Sozopol town.

Apollonia, which annually brings together some of the best musicians, painters, actors and artists from various genres, traditionally transforms during the days of the Festival the ancient town at the Black Sea coast into a capital of the Bulgarian Culture, thus attracting thousands of fans.

In 1984 Sozopol town hosted the first festival of arts. People of arts - painters, musicians, writers, poets, actors and architects were inspired by the beauty and unique town atmosphere. Over a ten-day period more than 70 cultural events can be seen on the five festival stages. Many of these have made their world and national premieres.

Since 2001 one of Apollonia’s signature events – the Festival’s jazz programme - goes under the name "Jazz Club UBB". Nowadays the musical event within Apollonia has a much broader coverage and bears the name "Apollonia Club/ UBB Stage".

But there is more to that – every year UBB bestows its special award to a Bulgarian artist – it is the second most important distinction, awarded during the Apollonia Festival of Arts, after the "Toksoforos Apollo" ("Bow-bearing Apollo") statuette prize, which the Festival organizers award to a renowned art figure.
