A decorative element – an application from the back of a two horse chariot of an Thracian aristocrat from the Roman era is being restored with the financial support of United Bulgarian Bank.

At the beginning of 2009 the archeologist Veselin Ignatov from the Nova Zagora regional museum made a surprising discovery by making an X-ray photo of a rusty metal sheet– under the corroded surface the photo revealed a unique decorative plate from an ancient Thracian chariot, dating back to the 2nd Century AD, with no analogy in the archeological science. The chariot was discovered by another archeologist - Mityo Kanchev during the 70-ies but its parts were kept in the museum’s depositor.

World archeology has no other similar application of an ancient chariot – a harmony of 3 various materials combined in one genuine work of art with high artistic value.

This discovery gives the start of the project “Restoration, preservation and exhibition of a Thracian chariot from the village of Karanovo” of United Bulgarian Bank, “Cultural Projects” Association and the Municipality of Nova Zagora.

The restored decorative plate has been shown in the Mall of Sofia in 2009. The reconstruction of the whole chariot is under way and is to be shown by the end of 2010.
